It's Just Dirt!
What's The Big Deal?
To a lot of people dirt is just something to be avoided. It tracks into your house. Kids play in it and get it all over the place. It's just a big nuisance.
For others soil is their lively hood. Today we go to the grocery store to purchase the items we need to feed ourselves and our families. There used to be a time when families grew all of their own food. However there seems to be a growing trend. More people are getting back to growing their own food.
Organic food is all the rage now. Very few things beat the taste of vine ripened vegetables that you grew yourself; free of pesticides. It's very disappointing to bite into tasteless, but nice looking produce from the grocery store.I'm sorry I got a little carried away... That's a sore spot for me. We are paying more and more money for produce that looks good. Yet it lacks nutrients and taste. Whew, I think I got it out of my system. Back to the topic.
Soil is the portion of the earths surface in which plants grow. It is a well developed system of minerals (sand, silt, clay), air, water, and organic matter. I've lived in Georgia where the dirt was red. I've lived in Virgina close to the beach - where of course it was very sandy. I've lived in Germany where the soil was rich and dark.
Now I live in the high desert of Southern California where there is a lot of clay. It makes for hard work when you have to dig. I tried a garden a time or two. I needed to add a lot of additives to encourage the plants grow. The ground squirrels and rabbits were very appreciative of all my hard work :-).
